On our parenting journey, every step we take is weighed on the delicate scale in our hearts: Am I giving my child enough freedom, or am I restricting them too much? In the dilemma created by this question, the words "rule" and "boundary" are often perceived as something to be feared. While we want to surround them with love and avoid clipping their wings, we sometimes overlook that a lack of rules is not freedom, but a deep ocean of uncertainty and anxiety. What makes a river's flow valuable are its banks, which keep it on its course and allow it to reach the sea safely. This is exactly the function that boundaries serve for children; they are not meant to restrict but to create a space of flow where they can safely realize their potential. In a child's world, a lack of rules is like walking alone in a foggy terrain where danger can come from any direction at any moment, and nothing is predictable. This situation creates a constant state of alertness and a heavy mental burden from the question, "What should I do now?"
Children, by nature, try to make sense of the world and predict the next step. Routines and rules offer them this predictability. Simple rules like, "Hands are washed before meals," "Teeth are brushed at bedtime," and "We don't hit others," are signposts that guide them through the complexity of life. Thanks to these signs, they can spend their energy on playing, learning, and exploring in the moment, rather than constantly thinking about what to do next. Boundaries teach a child not only what not to do, but also what is safe to do. This is one of the languages of love that most clearly conveys the message that their parents are thinking of them and protecting them. When a child tests boundaries, it is often not an act of rebellion or defiance, but a need to check if that boundary is really there, if they can lean on that wall. When the parent consistently maintains that boundary with love, the child receives the message, "Yes, I am safe. There is a structure holding me," and they relax. This sense of security is the cornerstone of healthy identity development and self-confidence.

Remember, our goal is not to put our children behind iron bars, but to offer them a loving, well-defined garden where they can safely explore the world. The fences of this garden will protect them from dangers, while the freedom within will allow them to grow.

Note to Parents: Think about the boundaries in your own childhood. Which rules made you feel safe, and which ones seemed meaningless? This awareness can shed light on how you guide your own child.
