The master's thesis titled "An Examination of the Contribution of Fictional Texts to the Pictorial Expression of 4th Grade Primary School Children" offers an interdisciplinary solution to the stereotyped approaches frequently encountered in art education. This study, completed by Çiğdem Doğan in 2013, investigates the impact of fictional texts on the pictorial development of children in the 10-11 age group. The primary objective of the study is to examine whether fairy tales, a genre of literature, positively affect children's ability for pictorial expression.
An experimental model was utilized in the research. Sixteen students randomly selected from a primary school were divided into experimental and control groups of eight. During the six-week application, both groups were given the same subjects, but fairy tales were additionally read to the experimental group. While the obtained data were analyzed using statistical methods such as pre-test, post-test, and the Mann-Whitney U test, the drawings were also evaluated through qualitative analysis.
According to the findings of the study, it was determined that fictional texts make significant contributions to children's pictorial expression. The experimental group students, who listened to fairy tales, distinctly developed their artistic abilities such as creativity, description, and characterization. It was observed that the students moved away from the template drawings seen in their pictures and created original images and compositions. For instance, in the drawings of the students who listened to "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" fairy tale, figures like the sun and trees were depicted in original forms outside of traditional templates. Students working on the subject of "Niğde in Their Dreams" were able to draw the sea, a zoo, or fantastic creatures with the inspiration they gained from fairy tales, showing improvement in the use of composition and perspective.
On the other hand, it was determined that the expected development did not occur in the control group, which was only given the subject. It was observed that the students gravitated towards known and stereotyped images such as Pinocchio in their drawings and struggled to create an original fiction and design. This situation reveals the necessity for different methods in art education. It is concluded that literary genres like fairy tales trigger children's imagination and develop their artistic expression skills.
This study recommends that art educators and parents incorporate fictional texts into lessons or daily routines to support children's creativity. It is emphasized that in order to reveal children's artistic potentials, rather than just giving them a subject, it is necessary to guide them with stories that will stimulate their imagination and nourish their fantastical worlds.
